From humble beginnings in Lagos, Nigeria, he has ascended to become the 42nd mayor of this vibrant Colorado city, officially inaugurated on June 6, 2023. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, on February 12, 1979, Yemi Mobolade’s early life was profoundly influenced by the rich culture and close-knit communities of his homeland. His father worked in finance at ExxonMobil, while his mother was a dedicated high school teacher. Growing up with an older brother and two younger sisters, Yemi’s upbringing revolved around strong family values and community bonds.

Yemi Mobolade’s life took a significant turn in August 1996 when, at the age of 17, he made the bold decision to immigrate to the United States. This marked the beginning of an ambitious and determined journey. He pursued higher education with great vigor, ultimately graduating from Bethel University in 2001.

Yemi Mobolade’s commitment to education didn’t end with his undergraduate degree. He went on to earn a master’s degree in management and leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University and a Master of Divinity from the A.W. Tozer Theological Seminary at Simpson University. After settling in Colorado Springs in 2010, Yemi Mobolade embarked on a multifaceted career, including entrepreneurship and community service. He co-founded two restaurants, established a church within the Christian and Missionary Alliance, and played a pivotal role as a ministry leader at the First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs.

In 2023, Yemi Mobolade embarked on a new and audacious journey by announcing his candidacy for the office of mayor of Colorado Springs. Running as an independent candidate, he captured the imagination of the city’s residents and made history. In the nonpartisan blanket primary held on April 4, Yemi Mobolade secured first place among 12 candidates, earning 29 percent of the vote. This remarkable victory propelled him to a runoff election against Republican Wayne W. Williams, the former secretary of state.

The runoff election, held on May 16, saw Yemi Mobolade emerge victorious with 57 percent of the vote. In doing so, he achieved two significant milestones: he became the first Black person to be elected as mayor of Colorado Springs, and he also became the first non-affiliated mayor in the city’s history.

On June 6, 2023, Yemi Mobolade was officially sworn into office as the 42nd mayor of Colorado Springs, marking a momentous and historic occasion for the city.
