Governor General Welcomes Four New Heads of Mission to Canada
Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, presided over a ceremony at Rideau Hall on December 4, 2023, extending a warm welcome to four new heads of mission to Canada. Governor General Simon cordially greeted these distinguished diplomats, representing The Gambia, Cambodia, Eswatini, and Suriname, as they formally presented their credentials.
The following diplomats presented their credentials during the event:
- His Excellency Momodou Lamin Bah, as High Commissioner-designate for the Republic of The Gambia.
- Her Excellency Sophea Eat, as Ambassador-designate of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
- His Excellency Kennedy Fitzgerald Groening, as High Commissioner-designate for the Kingdom of Eswatini.
- His Excellency Jan Marten Willem Schalkwijk, as Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Suriname.
Upon their arrival in Canada, it is customary for new heads of mission to present their letters of credence to the governor-general, marking the formal commencement of their diplomatic duties. These letters hold significant importance as the official documents accrediting a diplomat as an ambassador or high commissioner to another country.
The ceremonies held for the presentation of these letters of credence serve as pivotal moments in nurturing and strengthening the ties between Canada and the global diplomatic community.
