Montreal New Year’s Day Hit-and-Run: Namibian Diaspora Mourns Michael Chintakis & Augustin Wesley Katimba’s Fatal Accident

The tragic hit-and-run incident in Montreal on New Year’s Day resulted in the devastating deaths of two pedestrians: Michael Chintakis and Augustin Wesley Katimba, both in their early 30s.

Augustin Wesley Katimba, a member of the Namibian diaspora, was returning home from church when the accident occurred. Ambassador Margaret Mensah-Williams confirmed Katimba’s identity in a poignant Facebook post, stating:

“As the Namibian Mission in Washington DC, also accredited to Canada, we sadly announce the passing of 2 beloved Namibians in the diaspora… Mr. Auchaucher Wesley Katimba… on January 1, 2024, after 1 am, returning from church, just an hour after his birthday on December 31, 2023.”

The Namibian ambassador’s post detailed the heart-wrenching event, mentioning, “He was struck by a car driven by a Montreal driver with a criminal record. It happened just 2 minutes away from his home.”

The other victim, Michael Chintakis, and Katimba were hit at high speed at the intersection of Henri-Bourassa and de l’Acadie boulevards. The driver fled the scene in their vehicle, abandoning it approximately one and a half kilometers away before fleeing on foot.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Antoine Dubuc, faces charges including dangerous driving causing death, fleeing the scene of a fatal collision, and impaired driving causing death. Montreal police confirmed Dubuc’s apprehension, hospitalization for evaluation, and subsequent interrogation due to his criminal record.

Police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant mentioned, “He has a criminal record, and a blood sample was taken at the hospital to ascertain involvement of alcohol or drugs in the collision.”

Montreal police responded to 911 calls around 1:20 a.m., finding both victims, aged 30 and 31, unconscious. They were later declared dead at the scene. Investigations into the hit-and-run incident are ongoing as the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims mourn this tragic loss.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and communities affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
